Vision for Tolerance and Diversity Project
A unique pilot initiative by Shanghati Literary Society
Shanghati is pleased to announce the start of a new community cohesion project for Tower Hamlets. It will utilise innovative ways to engage people from diverse backgrounds to explore and challenge prejudice, intolerance, racism and hate. We are working with individuals and groups from across the Borough under three themes: case study based discussion; cross-over role plays and examination of images.
Battle for Millwall (1993/94): communities' struggle against racism and the far right

Case study based discussion
Stories from local history - across-curricular project in which students will investigate aspects of East End history / culture, focusing on four major historical events: Poplar rates dispute, Matchgirls strike, Great Dock strike / life of a dock labourer and the Battle of Cable Street. It starts on 28 May 2012 and runs for five weeks. 23 Year 8 students will research and produce a powerpoint, dance and poems for an end of project event on Thursday 12 July 2012 at 1.50pm. The powers of arts/sports in combating prejudice: the case of CARE Partnership
(20 years of proactive and creative fight against prejudice and intolerance). Thursday 23 August 2012, 2-5pm. There will be presentations, videos, workshops and panel discussion. Venue TBC. Targeted mainly at the third sector and statutory agencies. Working with CARE (Charlton Athletic Race Equality) Partnership.
Cross-over role plays
Overcoming barriers: drama sessions and performance - 25 -29 June 2012 (performance on 29/6/12) About 25-30 A Level students (mixed gender group) will produce a performance at Tower Hamlets College. They will be divided into 3 groups and each group will make a performance after 5 workshops of three hours per day for one week, which will involve devising exercises - using images, physical movements and group exercises. The students will devise a performance piece based on the theme of ‘overcoming barriers through diversity and respect’. This initiative is only open to college students. Examination of images
Explore and play together (EPT) - 25, 26 and 29 August and 1, 2 and 8 September 2012. Football coaching sessions and workshops exploring media images and using creativity to combat negative stereotyping. Three weeks of football coaching sessions - 5 two hours sessions - at Barkentine Estate 5-a-side Football Pitch. Three weeks of examination of images workshops - five one hour workshops - at Millwall Community Association. This project is aimed at all local young people. Working with Millwall Community Association.
Shanghati Literary Society is a very well known organisation within the Bengali community in the UK and beyond. It organises a major annual poetry festival in East London and runs various cultural activities, seminars, drama workshops and language classes during the year. With this new initiative Shanghati aims to help create a better world by uniting local communities and using the powers of arts and sports to demolish the foundations of prejudice and hate.
